Shoulder Pain in Overhead Athletes: Cricketers, Swimmers and Badminton Players

Overhead sport shoulders fail from capacity, not weakness alone. Here is how we assess and rebuild throwing and smashing shoulders.

Dr. Jay Trivedi · July 26, 2026

Bowlers, swimmers and badminton players load the shoulder thousands of times a season. Pain usually appears when demand outgrows the shoulder's capacity to absorb it.

Our assessment covers - Rotation range: internal rotation loss on the dominant side is common and often needs restoring. - Rotator cuff strength and endurance: not just a single max effort, but repeated effort under fatigue. - Scapular control and thoracic mobility. - Kinetic chain: hips and trunk generate most of the power; a stiff or weak base pushes work onto the shoulder.

Rehab priorities Early: settle irritability, restore rotation, isometric cuff loading. Mid: progressive cuff and scapular strength, thoracic and hip mobility work. Late: plyometric throwing or smashing progressions, volume rebuild with a bowling/serving load plan.

We rebuild throwing volume gradually with a written weekly plan rather than an all-or-nothing return.
